Biography
Alessandro Rizzoni (Riga, 1836 – Rome, 1902) was an academic painter of Italian-russian descent. He was born in Riga and acquired the basics of painting from his older brother, Pavel Rizzoni, who was an academic painter. Later, he enrolled in the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he studied under the guidance of Professor Bogdan Willewalde, a renowned battle painter. During his years at the Academy, he received three silver and two gold medals for his paintings on social and everyday life themes. He was awarded a scholarship that allowed him to study abroad for six years, particularly in Italy, Belgium, and France. He became an Academician in 1866 and a Professor in 1868 at the Imperial Academy of Arts. He was a friend and correspondent of Pavel Tretiakov. He gained fame for his paintings depicting scenes of everyday life in Italy.
