Object description
The painting depicts a man in a luxurious ceremonial suit made of golden brocade from the 17th century, wearing a wig and adorned with the Order of the Golden Fleece. He holds a formal Spanish-style hat made of black felt in his hands. The painting was acquired for the Gallery collection from the Goluchowski collection. The compositional approach of the work and the features of the portrayed individual echo the portrait style of the studio of Martin van Meytens (1695–1770), who was a court painter. In his studio, artists worked on many portraits of the emperor and his entourage. The canvas depicts Francis Stephen of Lorraine, the husband of Empress Maria Theresa. He was Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire under the name Francis I from 1745 until his death. Former Duke of Lorraine (1728–1737) under the name Francis III. He renounced his title, ceding Lorraine to France in exchange for acquiring the crown of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. In 1736, he married Maria Theresa, Queen of Bohemia and Hungary, thereby founding the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. Francis Stephen and his wife had 16 children. Among their children were emperors Joseph II and Leopold II and queens Maria Carolina of Naples and Marie Antoinette of France. With his wife, Maria Theresa, Francis I founded the dynasty that ruled Austria and the Habsburg hereditary lands until World War I.
