Object description
David is known from the Bible (Third Book of Kings) as the king of the united kingdom of the 12 tribes of Israel, with its capital in Jerusalem (c. 11th–9th centuries BC). David killed the mighty Philistine warrior Goliath, thus beginning the expulsion of enemies from the land of Israel. The statuette is a miniature replica of Michelangelo's famous work. Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475, Caprese (Tuscany) – 1564, Rome) was a great Italian sculptor, monumentalist, architect, poet, and engineer. The master's sculpture, “David” (1501–1504), is an outstanding work of art crafted from marble. The figure symbolised the rebirth of the Florentine Republic and stood in front of the main government building. Over the centuries, it has been reproduced in bronze in various sizes. It depicts a naked young man standing calmly in anticipation of a duel with his enemy, holding a sling on his shoulder with his left hand and a stone in his right hand, which is lowered. The figure is in contrapposto, leaning on his right leg, with his left leg slightly forward and bent at the knee. The head, with curly short hair and regular features of a youthful face, is turned three-quarters to the left, and the torso is turned one-quarter to the right. A vertical support in the form of a tree trunk props the figure's right leg. The sculpture is mounted on a wooden podium.
