Object description
The polychrome wooden sculpture of the Crucifixion is carved in accordance with Western iconographic tradition, with the legs crossed and nailed to the cross with a single nail. The figure of Christ is elongated, with its proportions somewhat simplified; however, there is a noticeable attempt to convey the anatomy of the human body. The dramatic nature of the scene is emphasised by the tilt of the Saviour's head, the details of his beard, and his closed eyes. His face is frozen in an expression of sorrow. Christ's naked body is wrapped in a small relief loincloth, the drapery of which gives the image a sense of dynamism. The simplicity and expressiveness of the sculptural image emphasise the spiritual power of the image, which was intended to evoke compassion and reflection on Christ's sacrifice. Despite significant losses, the work is an example of sacred sculpture that combines artistic simplicity and strong spiritual content.
