Object description
The polychrome figure of the crucified Christ is carved in accordance with Western iconography. His feet are placed one on top of the other, and his palms are clenched into fists. The stocky, somewhat disproportionate body of Christ is rendered with pronounced naturalism: arms spread wide, a hint of anatomical recreation of the chest and sunken abdomen, legs bent at the knees with carefully crafted knee joints, and tense neck muscles. The muscles on his arms and legs are texturally rendered. Jesus' head is tilted to the right, pressed against his chest, his eyes closed. His face expresses calm and submission. His head is adorned with a crown of thorns, from under which short hair is visible, seemingly blowing in the wind. Christ's naked body is covered by a loincloth tied in a knot on the right side. The dynamic, deeply carved diagonal folds of the loincloth on the hips add a decorative touch to the sculptural image.
