Object description
The sculptural image of Christ has suffered significant damage; however, despite this, it is still possible to imagine its original appearance. Christ's stocky body is rendered with pronounced naturalism: there are hints of anatomical recreation of the chest with protruding ribs and legs bent at the knees. The artist paid particular attention to the textured face, with closed eyes, sunken cheeks, and sharp cheekbones, as well as slightly raised eyebrows, all of which indicated unspeakable pain and suffering. Christ's naked body is covered with a loincloth tied with a thick cord. The sculptural image is made decorative by the smooth, shallow diagonal folds of the bandage on the hips. The sculptural image embodies the theme of suffering, where the language of art serves to draw people closer to the mystery of Christ's sacrifice.
