Object description
The sculpture depicts part of an altar cross, with Christ crucified at its centre. Behind him are carved rays of light, symbolising the divine light that illuminates Jesus even at the moment of his death. The crucifixion is rendered in the traditional Western iconographic style. The figure is depicted at the moment of suffering on the cross. The elongated body is fragile, with a distinct, dramatic curve. Arms stretched upwards, bent legs, head tilted to the right – these details convey a sense of suffering and at the same time submission. Christ's naked body is covered only by a carved drapery on his hips, whose dynamic folds enhance the emotional tone of the work. The sculptural image combines elements of professional skill with the expressive sincerity of folk art. The image appears as the embodiment not only of Christ's suffering, but also of eternal hope.
