Object description
The wooden Crucifix, bearing distinct features of Ukrainian Baroque sacred sculpture, is presented in accordance with the Western iconographic type of the Crucifixion. The work is integral, its imagery and artistic expressiveness fully revealed, allowing for an assessment of the sculptor’s level of mastery. Christ appears before the viewer at the moment of death upon the Cross. His head is bowed, his eyes closed; the face conveys both tranquility and tragedy. The plastically modelled figure of Christ, despite the well-emphasised muscles of the body, is anatomically rendered in a generalised manner, without excessive naturalism, yet with an emphasis on suffering and exhaustion. The curve of the torso and a certain asymmetry of the arms and legs lend the composition dramatic tension. At the hips is the traditional loincloth, interpreted as pleated drapery. Christ is presented not only as a martyr, but also as a Saviour who accepted death with humility. The sculpture combines realism with the profound spiritual content characteristic of the Baroque period.
