Object description
The image of the Crucified Christ follows the Western iconographic tradition. The Saviour is presented at the moment of death upon the Cross: the head bowed, the eyes closed, the body elongated and slightly curved to the left, with a crown of thorns upon the head – a symbol of humiliation and suffering. The figure of Christ is rendered in a generalised manner, without excessive naturalism, yet with an emphasis on suffering and exhaustion. The raised, tensely outstretched arms, the legs bent at the knees, and the characteristic curve of the body impart dramatic tension to the composition. The master plausibly conveys the anatomical features of the human body: the carefully carved rib cage, the sunken abdomen, the torso with a clearly defined waist, and the articulated muscles of the arms and legs. The calm expression of the weary, texturally detailed face creates an impression of sincerity and profound spirituality. Everything in the image underlines the completion of earthly suffering. The naked body is covered at the hips by a perizoma, modelled volumetrically so as to create an impression of plasticity and movement. Despite the dramatic nature of the moment, the image is imbued with a sense of silence and reconciliation. The master has succeeded in combining the realism of torment with spiritual grandeur, elevating the image beyond a mere sculptural representation – it becomes a symbol of sacrifice and boundless love.
