Object description
The mould takes the form of a wooden rectangle, on both sides of which recessed patterns are carved. The entire upper part of one side is occupied by carved rows of letters. Their silhouettes are mirrored, as they were intended to appear correctly when printed. The letters are executed in a strict, classical antique form, with proportional strokes and serifs. Below the text is a vegetal ornament that balances the inscription and lends decorative completeness to the board. Of particular interest is the date 1748, which may be associated with a specific event. The compositional centre of the other side of the mould is a recessed vegetal ornament. The lower edge of the matrix features a border formed of scrolls, stylised depictions of lilies, and leaves. The matrix combines script with symmetrical vegetal ornament, standing as evidence of the development of printing culture and decorative design in the Ukrainian lands.
