Object description
The wooden carved image, by virtue of its pose, attire, and the halo surrounding the head, indicates its religious purpose. The large circle – a nimbus, a symbol of divine light and sanctity – characterises the depiction of Christian saints. Due to significant losses, it is difficult to attribute the saint, as the face and hands are missing. Judging by the silhouette and the arrangement of the folds of the tunic and the cloak fastened at the chest, the figure is rendered in a seated position. The image of the saint appears frontally, in a calm, static pose, with a nimbus around the head. The garment, with deep draperies, testifies to the master’s attention to the form and structure of the fabric. The attire is modelled with recessed relief incisions of smooth lines, softly enveloping the figure in an attempt to convey volume. Despite the substantial losses, the work preserves its original symbolism and spiritual essence.
