Object description

Franciszek Salezy Potocki (1700–1772) was the son of Jozef Potocki and Teofila Cetner. He was a voivode of Belz, Krajczy of the Crown, voivode of Volyn and Kyiv. Franciszek Salezy Potocki was the owner of Chervonohrad (Khrystynopil), a philanthropist, who built hospitals. He was married twice: his first wife was Zofia Rzeczycka, the second – Anna Potocka, the mother of Stanislaw Szczesny, who founded Sofiyivka Park in Uman. The half–length portrait of the man is done in the traditional manner: the figure is turned three–quarters to the right, he is wearing a terracotta–red caftan with a blue ribbon and the Order of the White Eagle emerges out of a dark background. There is also a distinctive inscription: Franciszek Potocki / Wda Kijowski / Kaniwski, starosta. The inscription was obviously made later, as Salezy Potocki was not the elder of Kaniv. According to M. Gebarowicz, the artist mistakenly confused the portrayed man with Mikolaj Potocki.
