Object description
The icon presents a frontal depiction of St John the Baptist – a saint whose figure is shrouded in austere, ascetic grandeur. The artist has captured an image in which profound spiritual concentration merges with the expressive language of medieval painting. The figure of the saint stands against a background of a rich ochre hue, which lends the artwork an air of solemnity and sacred tension. In the lower section of the icon, on a light green ground line, a stylised landscape motif with simplified vegetation represents the prophet's desert environment.
The head of John is encircled by a round halo, a symbol of holiness. His face is distinguished by subtle psychological depth: the elongated, ascetic features with a high forehead crossed by a vertical furrowed wrinkle, firmly closed small lips, and a piercing gaze directed at the viewer all testify to the saint's deep inner focus. His dishevelled hair adds a certain emotional intensity to the image.
The Baptist's garments are rendered in the colour palette traditional for his iconographic type. A heavy, olive-greenish himation, permeated with graphic lines of straight folds and highlights, is draped over a hairshirt. The rendering of the drapery is treated with broad, somewhat stylised folds characteristic of Ukrainian painting of this period, when Byzantine canonicity blended with the local artistic tradition.
The saint's right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing, while his left hand holds an unrolled scroll with an inscription – an attribute that underscores the prophetic mission of John the Baptist as the forerunner of Christ's coming. The artwork is a characteristic monument of 16th-century Ukrainian sacred painting, showcasing the high level of iconographic skill of the period and a profound understanding of canonical tradition, organically combined with vivid artistic expressiveness.
