Object description
The icon presents a two-figure composition on a single plane, featuring the majestic, full-length figures of Saint Nicholas and Christ the Almighty. The architectonically constructed silhouettes fill almost the entire vertical space of the icon's recessed central panel. On the left, Saint Nicholas is depicted in traditional episcopal vestments – a light phelonion and a wide omophorion adorned with large dark crosses. In his left hand is a Gospel Book embellished with precious stones, while the gesture of his right hand is directed towards the Book. Nicholas points to the Holy Scripture, emphasising his symbolic duty to teach the Christian faith and preach the truth. The venerable face of the hierarch is dominated by a high forehead and a short grey beard. The saint's facial expression is gentle yet uncompromising, radiating unwavering faith.
On the right is the frontal, static figure of Christ the Almighty, rendered in the traditional iconography of the Pantocrator. His right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing, symbolising the two natures of Christ – Divine and Human. The image is endowed with profound psychological depth. The face of Jesus is framed by long dark hair falling onto His shoulders and a distinctly outlined, wedge-shaped beard. His halo features a traditional round shape without an accented cross.
The vestments are modelled with graphically sharp, concise lines that do not create superfluous volume. A restrained, noble palette dominated by greyish-olive tones characterises the overall painterly solution of the artwork. Such a paired composition is a great rarity. The spatial construction of the work is distinguished by a monumentality that makes it resemble an ancient temple wall painting. The icon is a unique specimen of 16th-century sacred art, in which the traditions of the Late Byzantine style intertwine with distinctive features of Eastern European painting.
