Biography
Volodymyr Patyk (1926, Chornyi Ostriv [now Lviv Oblast] – 2016, Lviv) was a prominent Ukrainian artist and landscape painter. He held the title of People's Artist of Ukraine, was a laureate of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize, and an honorary citizen of Lviv. In 1953, he graduated from the Lviv State Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts, having studied under Roman Selskyi, Mykola Fediuk, and Yosyp Bokshai. Following his graduation, he travelled extensively across Ukraine, Central Asia, Siberia, and the Baltic states. Patyk developed a distinctive painting style rooted in bold colour contrasts. He participated in national, all-union, and international art exhibitions from 1956 onwards. Solo exhibitions of his work were held in Lviv (a jubilee exhibition in 2009, and in 2010), Hangzhou (China, 2011), and Lutsk (2021). Patyk's works are held in Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery, the Andrey Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv, and the Korsaks Museum of Contemporary Ukrainian Art in Lutsk, as well as in other museums and private collections across Ukraine, the USA, Canada, France, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, China, and other countries. In 2024, the Patyk Museum opened in Lviv, housed in a former mansion at 4 Yana Mateika Street.
Object description
The drawing was created during the artist's travels through southern Ukraine and Moldova in the summer and early autumn of 1969. It depicts characteristic cottages of a Moldovan village, scattered across the slope of the upland known as "Codri". The composition is executed as a rapid sketch in ink, using both pen and brush. The pen was employed for light ink strokes, while the brush was used for broad washes.
