Object description
Stefano della Bella created the etching suite "I Principii del Disegno" ("The Principles of Design") around 1641. It is a collection of models for beginners and amateurs studying the art of drawing. The suite served as a visual aid with guidance on mastering hatching techniques and form construction.
An elderly man is depicted strictly in profile, facing left, with his head slightly tilted downwards, giving his image a thoughtful, contemplative expression.
The artist masterfully renders age features: deep-set eyes, expressive wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead, a prominent bald head bordered at the back by wavy strands of hair, and a thick, full beard. Remarkably fine hatching of varying density allows the master to recreate the play of light and shadow, the volume of the head, and the soft texture of the hair and beard.
The suite was published in Paris by the artist's close friend and regular publisher, Israël Henriet.
