Object description
This sheet contains two independent works of differing character: a half-length portrait of the artist's son on the obverse and a printed illustrative plate from a palaeographical atlas on the reverse.
The obverse features a half-length portrait of a middle-aged man (image size: 40 × 27.5 cm), the artist's son, with his head turned to the right in profile. He has short hair with signs of incipient alopecia. His facial features – a prominent straight nose, defined cheekbones, and compressed lips – are conveyed with a resolute outline and moderate tonal modelling around the cheeks and neck. Of his garments, a jacket and a collar are visible, delineated with generalised, schematic lines without detailed texture. His gaze is directed forward, and his facial expression is focused and restrained. Medium: charcoal on toned paper.
The reverse contains an original printed plate (Tab. XII) from the academic publication "Monumenta Poloniae Palaeographica" (Kraków, 1907, edited by S. Krzyżanowski). It reproduces a high-quality facsimile of a medieval parchment document in an archaic Latin script (cursive hand), with a round wax seal attached to the lower edge on a hanging braided cord.
The use of a sheet from the "Monumenta Poloniae Palaeographica" scientific atlas as the support reflects a common practice among mid-20th-century graphic artists who utilised the reverse sides of high-quality, large-format academic plates. The thick, premium paper of these plates served as an ideal artistic surface for charcoal drawing.
