Object description
The sheet features four self-portraits executed on both sides. On the recto, two depictions of the artist's head wearing a hat are presented vertically, one beneath the other. The facial features – an elongated oval, a prominent moustache, and tightly closed lips – are captured with a distinct linear contour and moderate tonal modelling. The artist's primary focus here is the exploration of various gradations of chiaroscuro: while the shadow beneath the brim of the hat in the upper drawing softly models the eyes, it becomes exceptionally deep and dense in the lower one, dramatically obscuring the entire upper part of the face.
On the verso of the sheet, there are two frontal self-portraits showing the artist without a hat, with pronounced alopecia. These are also arranged vertically, one beneath the other. The lower image is emphasised through vigorous hatching and soft smudging of the charcoal around the head, creating a dark background effect against which the face is clearly defined. All four self-portraits are typologically identical and belong to a single cycle of successive portrait studies executed by the artist in June and October 1921.
