Object description
The widespread use of artificial illumination within temples fostered the emergence of fixtures diverse in both typology and design. In church tradition, these are conventionally divided into "portable" and "stationary" light. The presented single-branched wooden floor pricket candlestick typologically belongs specifically to the category of "stationary light". It served as a decorative element of the church interior, executed in a complex plastic form that combines functionality with an expressive artistic language. The structural design of the piece comprises three parts: a massive lower three-lobed base, an elongated central shaft, and a cup-shaped terminal.
The base of the work is lavishly adorned with relief ornament, the decorative motifs of which create a sense of natural movement. The textured surface, featuring numerous projections and recesses, enhances the play of light and shadow, making the decoration particularly expressive. The central part of the candlestick is entirely covered with relief elements – bands, beads, protruding circles, and zigzags. A small ring-like swelling on the elongated shaft visually divides the composition into tiers. In terms of artistic execution, the piece creates the impression of a solemn, somewhat fantastic decorative object. The ornamental embellishment of the candlestick enlivens the strict symmetry of the form, transforming it into a harmonious synthesis of architecture, sculpture, and decorative applied art. The work demonstrates the craftsman's fondness for complex form and relief, ornamentality, and the contrast of shapes. The single-branched floor candlestick is perceived not merely as a utilitarian item, but as a distinctive work of art in which the practical purpose is subordinated to the desire to create an impression of magnificence, refinement, and decorative grandeur.
