Object description
An impression from the fourth plate of the aforementioned series. The subject reflects the artist's favoured marine and battle themes, executed with meticulous, almost jewellery-like precision in detailing. In the foreground on the left, the massive prow of a military sailing ship dominates the composition. The ship's rigging and embossed decorative elements are elaborately rendered. On the coastline, figures of people are depicted covering their heads with cloaks. On the right, people are shown in a rowboat. The background of the composition is formed by a coastline featuring a round fortress tower and the silhouettes of other sailing vessels. To the right of the tower, a column of smoke rises from a cannon blast. The composition demonstrates the artist's mature style: fine hatching, masterful rendering of chiaroscuro, lightness of lines, and the ability to construct dramatic multi-figure scenes.
