Object description
An impression from the seventh plate of the aforementioned series. The print is dedicated to the daily marine and port life of the seventeenth century, which was one of the artist's favourite themes during his travels and stay in France. In the foreground on the right, a large group of dockworkers and sailors harmoniously load heavy packages and bales of goods into a long rowboat.
On the right, a fragment of the stern of a large galley or vessel moored near the pier is depicted. The decorative elements on the vessel are drawn in detail. On the right stands a man with a long pike, who is likely overseeing the unloading process. In the middle ground on the left, two large multi-masted sailing ships are depicted on the calm sea surface.
The work demonstrates a refinement of lines, miniature detailing of figures, a soft aerial perspective, and a masterful play of chiaroscuro.
