Object description
The image of an angel in the hypostasis of a small naked or half-naked child – putto – can be traced back to Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo art. The sculpture presents the naked figure of an angel, girded at the hips, with a drapery covered by violent folds with sharp creases of overlapping lines. Its body is notable for its forms' roundness and lines' softness. Ritual waves of unruly hair frame a round face with expressive cheeks and a snub nose. The slightly squinted eyes and subtle smile add to the picture's childlike naivety and spontaneity. Slight asymmetry, unnatural body proportions and small wings behind the back create the illusion of flight.
