Object description
The compositional centre of the altar cross with the rectangular stepped base is the Crucifixion, executed in line with the Eastern tradition iconography. Christ is nailed to the cross with four nails, his feet placed parallel, and his palms open. The artist depicted the Saviour as deceased, with his eyes closed and his head tilted to the right. Jesus's face, chest, arms, and legs are schematically modelled. The meticulously crafted crown of thorns on his head is depicted as two intertwined rolls with protruding spikes. The loincloth fastened with a large knot adds decorativeness to the composition. The sculptural image is imbued with naive realism.
