Object description
The full-length sculptural depiction presents the bishop in a baroque pose with his head turned to the right shoulder. The contrapposto, spiral-like silhouette adds dynamism to the sculpture. The figure, depicted in motion, is light and graceful. The stylistic portrayal of the image and the manner of modelling folds resemble the work of the 18th-century master Anton Osinski. The author focused on conveying form, tone, and emotions rather than reproducing anatomical accuracy, evident in the figure's narrow shoulders and slight disproportionality. Attention to detail and the reproduction of realistic facial expressions characterise the work. The master focused his attention on the gaunt, ascetic face of the bishop. The man is portrayed with a forehead crossed by horizontal lines of wrinkles, wide-open eyes framed by arcs of eyelids, prominent cheekbones, sunken cheeks, a straight nose, and closed lips. The figure's expression is enhanced by dynamic folds of clothing, unruly curls of hair showing out from under the mitre, and long strands of beard seemingly blowing in the wind. The draperies form peculiar, abstract, angular planes with geometrically shaped, sharply carved folds. The work is impressive in its expressiveness of movement, clarity of the pose, and unique silhouette.
