Object description
The sculptural image shows a full-length figure of an angel in the form of a young man with his left hand clasped to his chest. The slender figure is frontal, restrained in movement and shown in a classical contrapposto pose. There is a particular static in the work. The young man's head is tilted to the left shoulder, and his massive neck smoothly passes into the lowered shoulders. The figure is depicted with an elongated face with a soft oval line, high forehead, low brow line, wide open eyes, straight nose, and wide lips. Dynamic strands of wavy hair frame the face and fall to the shoulders. The angel is dressed in a long belted tunic with a deep round neckline outlined by a golden line. The pattern of the drapery is generalised. The garment, which evenly envelops the figure of the angel, falls in vertical folds with outlined ribbed protrusions that repeat rhythmically. The sculpture embodies restraint and submission, which emphasises the static pose and the restrained pattern of the draperies.
