Object description
The design of the cross is six-pointed, with an elongated central crosspiece, at the intersection of which rays emerge at four corners. The compositional solution is simple and laconic, without multi-figure subjects. On the front of the cross is a picturesque crucifixion, which occupies the central part of the cross and most of the stem. At the top of the central stem is the title with the inscription "INRI". The full-length figure of the Saviour is depicted with his head resting on his right shoulder, his arms outstretched, and his body covered with a white bandage on his thighs. The artist tried to reproduce the anatomical features of the human body. The polychromy enhances the emotional expressiveness of the image. Under Christ's feet is Adam's skull, and on either side, at the ends of the lower frame, John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary are depicted in warm colours. On the back of the cross is the scene of the Baptism of Christ, which occupies the central part of the staff and the central frame. The basis of the iconographic scene is the naked figure of the Saviour, covered only by a bandage on his thighs. His arms are crossed on his chest, a halo surrounds his head, and a dove – the Holy Spirit – hovers above him. At the ends of the central frame, with a clear graphic outline, are the waist figures of John the Baptist and an angel.
