Object description
The seven-pointed cross was formed based on the four-pointed cross, on which, in addition to the main part, two other parts developed: the upper part, where the title sign was placed, and the lower part, formed by a foot support. The seven-pointed cross from the village of Zalisky is the most common type of cross in Ukraine, with a laconic compositional solution. On the front, the folk master, using the technique of flat carving, placed a contoured cross in the central core, decorated with flat carved parallel horizontal and vertical lines. The crucifix is executed in imitation of Western iconography, where Christ is nailed with three nails, with his feet placed on top of each other. The naked body of Jesus is conventionally carved in graphic detail, with his head tilted to his right shoulder, his arms outstretched to his sides, his palms closed, and a knotted bandage on his thighs. Above Christ's head in the upper frame is a traditional plaque with the letters "INRI". On the reverse side, in a contoured cross with carved lines, there is a flat carved figure of the Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus. Halos illuminate the heads of Mary and Christ. The facial features of the saints are represented schematically. On the upper frame are the letters representing the Virgin Mary. A clear line and a relief pattern in the form of a wave outline the perimeter of the cross. A small handle is attached to the lower end of the three-framed cross.
