Object description
The tondo painting by an unknown artist depicts a scene from a rectangular engraving created around 1585–1590 by the prominent Italian artist Agostino Carracci (1557–1602).
Carracci's original work, entitled "Satyr Whipping a Nymph" (Satiro che flagella una ninfa), was part of "Le Lascivie" (The Lascivious Prints) series of graphic sheets. It consisted of erotic mythological subjects and spread throughout Europe in numerous prints.
The action unfolds against the backdrop of a twilight forest. In the centre of the tondo, a nude nymph tied to a tree is depicted with her back to the viewer. To her left stands a stocky satyr whipping her. In the background on the right, another satyr with a stick in his hands emerges from the forest.
While in engraving light and shade were modelled using hatching, the copyist artist reproduced this contrast through pictorial chiaroscuro, accentuating the nymph's snow-white body against the dark landscape.
