Object description
The work is an example of 18th-century genre painting and demonstrates the influence of the Bamboccianti movement – initiated by Dutch artists in Italy – on French genre painting. During this period, genre scenes set near taverns depicting riders and peasants at rest gained popularity in France. The general tone of the painting is rather dark, rendered in deep brown, ochre, and dark green tones.
The work by an unknown artist presumably depicts a scene of wine tasting or sale near a rural tavern. In the centre of the composition, against the backdrop of buildings, a rider on a white horse is depicted. He has stopped near the tavern where two men are dining at an outdoor table. A large wooden bucket, from which a cluster of grapes hangs, is attached to the horse's saddle.
The man sitting at the table raises a glass of red wine to eye level, as if assessing its colour, clarity, and quality. The rider, leaning on the saddle bow, watches the reaction of the potential buyer intently.
At the horse's feet in the foreground, a dog is depicted with a piece of meat in its teeth. In the background on the left, in the semi-darkness, the figure of a peasant with a stick on his shoulder can be seen walking deeper into the landscape.
All characters are dressed in practical, everyday clothing that emphasises their social status and occupation.
