The painting by an unknown 17th-century artist depicts the Gospel iconographic theme of the Entombment of Christ. It captures the moment when Jesus Christ is being transferred to a stone tomb after the Deposition from the Cross. The body of the Saviour, radiating a soft divine light, is gently lowered onto a pristine white shroud by Joseph of Arimathea. The wounds from the nails on Jesus's hands and the spear in His side are clearly visible.
In the lower part of the copper plate, the Virgin Mary is depicted in white garments, swooning from overwhelming grief and pain. Beside her is Mary Magdalene in golden-yellow attire, tenderly supporting the fainting Mother of God to prevent her from falling to the ground. To the right, another Holy Woman is seen assisting Joseph of Arimathea. The figures of the holy women are haloed with delicate, faint nimbi.
The artwork, executed in warm golden-ochre tones, serves as a characteristic example of 17th-century Italian Baroque religious painting.
