Object description
In the painting, a woman is depicted sitting among the vegetables. In her right hand, she holds a plate of cherries. To her left is a bust-length depiction of a young man looking at the woman and pointing at the vegetables with his hand. The work is an allegorical composition – nature's gifts symbolise abundance. The artist worked under the influence of an informal group of painters known as the Bambocciante (Italian: rag doll). This group formed around the Dutch master Pieter van Laer and worked in a manner typical of the Dutch artists. Their works are characterised by contrasting light, depictions of wealth and the diversity of nature's gifts, genre and domestic scenes, and episodes of street life. The artist adapted his work to salon painting, creating a canvas that would please the viewer's eye.
