Object description
The Gallery acquired the canvas as a work by an unknown artist of the 15th century. In 1981, the authorship of Giovanni di Francesco Toscani was suggested (by O. Samarkina and D. Shelest) based on a comparison with a composition from the Hermitage Museum collection. H. Derhachova suggested that this composition was created with the involvement of the artist's workshop students. The compositional scheme featuring the Madonna at the centre, flanked by figures of saints (Mary Magdalene and John the Evangelist), is replicated in many works of the Florentine School of the 15th century. A similar type of depiction of the Madonna with the Child can be seen in the painting by Giovanni di Francesco Toscani (Florence, 1372–1430) titled "Madonna and Child with Angels" from the collection of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (USA). This indicates the popularity of such a compositional scheme. However, significant losses of the original painting in several areas hinder the ability to assess the quality of the artwork.
