Object description
A half-length portrait of a young woman, with her body turned to the left and her head to the right, gazing directly at the viewer. She wears clothes typical of European women's fashion of the 18th century. The open bodice with a neckline is extended below the waist in a triangular shape. The woman is depicted with a smooth, high hairstyle and a made-up face. On her head, she wears a hat with ribbons and flowers. Light powdered wigs concealed age, giving an elegant and somewhat whimsical appearance. Besides its artistic significance, a portrait always serves as an indicator of social status. Portraits of the 18th century became more diverse, reflecting the social standing of the subjects, ranging from high-ranking individuals to townspeople.
