Biography: Oksana Zinaida Liaturynska (1 February 1902, Leski Khutor, Volyn – 13 June 1970, Minneapolis, Minnesota) was a Ukrainian artist, sculptor, writer, poetess, and public figure. From the early 1920s, she studied at the Ivan Steshenko Kremenets Private Ukrainian Grammar School. In 1922, she ran away from home to Germany. Not having a residence permit in 1924, Oksana Liaturynska ended up in Prague in Czechoslovakia. She was actively involved in the social and cultural life of Ukrainian emigration. She studies at the Faculty of Philosophy of Charles University, the Ukrainian Studio of Plastic Art, and the Czech High School of Art and Industry. She worked a lot, particularly in sculpture. The artist participated in many exhibitions in London, Paris, and Berlin and gained recognition as a master of sculptural portraits. She created monuments of fallen UHA soldiers in Pardubice (1932) and busts of Taras Shevchenko, Tomasz Masaryk, Symon Petliura, and Yevhen Konovalets. Several tombstones made by Oksana Liaturynska can be seen in Prague cemeteries.

Object description

The work is a small polychrome sculpture depicting a shepherd wearing folk clothes and playing the flute. Oksana Liaturynska repeatedly turned to folk art in her work. The colouring and the image of the "shepherd" are inspired by folklore motifs.
