Biography
Franz Christoph Janneck was born in Graz but became known as a painter in Vienna in the 1730s. He received his art education there, in the art workshop of Matthias Vangus. He then entered the Vienna Academy of Arts, studying under Jacob van Schuppen. Franz Christoph Janneck is regarded as one of Austria's greatest painters, specialising in low genres. He created small-format genre scenes, landscapes, and intimate paintings but rarely turned to religious subjects. In his works, he combined elements of Italian painting with genre scenes from Dutch and French art. Due to his skilful use of tonalities and realistic reproduction of minor details, his artworks were extremely popular among collectors.
Object description
"The Landscape with Ruins" painting is a vivid example of the artist's imaginary landscapes, in which he combined real landscape elements with imaginary ruins of buildings. The genre of architectural "capriccio", or the images of imaginary architectural views, became extremely popular among collectors in the 18th century, which contributed to the spread of these images throughout Europe. The artist depicted the fictional ruins of a castle against the background of a mountain landscape with a river flowing past it. The painter added figures of peasants doing their daily business to supplement the picture. Although Franz Christoph Janneck mostly executed his paintings on copper, this work was done on a board.
