The watercolour work was executed before the artist’s second trip to Paris, in the winter of 1911. It depicts St Mary’s Square in Lviv, with the Adam Mickiewicz Monument at its centre. The column, recently completed with a stepped stereobate, serves as the square’s monumental focal point. Behind it are the now-demolished building No. 9 and building No. 8, on the site of which the Sprecher tenement (historical name) now stands. Rising above the rooftops are the towers of the Latin Cathedral and the Town Hall. The Adam Mickiewicz Monument was unveiled in 1904, and shortly afterwards the area around it was given its contemporary layout.
