Object description
Miko, a maid at a Shinto shrine in Japan, is depicted walking. A young woman with an elaborate hairdo is wearing two long-sleeved kimonos, with the upper one, decorated with chrysanthemums, held up to her waist so that the lower one, decorated with maple leaves, is clearly visible. The kimono contrasts with the Obi belt, which has an exquisite geometric pattern. In her left hand, she holds a rope to which a pumpkin bottle and a flowering twig are tied. In her right hand is a branch decorated with mochi rice balls, to which wooden plates with hieroglyphic wishes (ema), a dice, and round "mooncakes" are hooked. The plinth is finely engraved with sacred evergreen sakaki branches and an embossed image of flowers.
