Object description
The full-length frontal figure of the saint is depicted in a dynamic contrapposto pose with emotionally outstretched arms. His head is lowered, with his gaze directed downward. A high forehead, almond-shaped eyes with clear eyelid arcs, a straight nose with flared nostrils, and a slightly open mouth convey the features of an ascetic individual. The elongated oval of the face is framed by soft waves of hair and long, flowing strands of beard, seemingly billowing in the wind. The saint is dressed in a long tunic. A drapery is thrown over the right shoulder, modelled with low-relief folds transitioning from smooth curves to formless planes, echoing the figure's contours. The sculpture is executed in the S-shaped pose (figura serpentinata), which dominated Baroque sculpture, with the right leg slightly bent at the knee and thrust forward. The entire work is imbued with dynamic movement, emphasised by the posture, expressive long strands of the saint's beard, and the drapery.
