Object description
Women's portraits were of great importance in Ukrainian painting art of the 18th century. It is in them artists showed not only their artistic talent but also demonstrated their liking for the portrait subjects. In female portraits, one can feel influences from both local and European traditions. The paintings detailed the texture and fabric of expensive dresses, jewellery, fashionable hairstyles with wigs, and emphasised the attractiveness of the women portrayed. The stylistic changes in Ukrainian portraiture coincided with the changes that were taking place in European painting. Women were painted in fashionable European dresses and wigs, a smile appeared on their lips, which provided the portraits with emotionality. The portrait of an unidentified woman against a drapery background is shown in the tradition of ceremonial depiction. Using clear lines, the artist conveys the lovely facial features of a young woman wearing a dark blue cloak over a light coloured dress decorated with lace. The work is executed in the style of provincial artists, using large coloured spots.
