Object description
Mary Stuart (December 8, 1542 – February 8, 1587) was the Queen of Scotland (until 1567) and the Queen of France (1559–1560) as the wife of King Francis II. She was a contender to the English throne. Artists of all eras were interested in her story, full of dramatic events. Based on stylistic characteristics, the portrait was made by a student or follower of Jean de Court. He was a court painter of Mary Stuart and created many portraits of her, although almost all of them were destroyed after her execution. The picture exhibits two prominent features of the French Renaissance: the courtly nature of painting, and the influence of Italian Mannerism. This is manifested in deliberately elongated facial proportions, bringing the queen's image closer to the Mannerist ideal.
