Object description
The Western rite tradition of using images of saints, martyrs, less often, monks for processions has been known since the Middle Ages. Processional sculptures were dressed in specially made garments of expensive fabric decorated with Christian symbols, ornaments, and stones. In the Ukrainian church, this tradition spread in the 18th century. The iconographic sculpture of the Virgin Mary from the church in Plisnesko, which belongs to the "Immaculate Conception'' type, is a processional figure. A three-dimensional figure carved from wood was dressed in robes, and hair was attached to its head. The full-length figure of the Virgin Mary is placed on the globe, and a serpent with an apple in its mouth wriggles around it. The figure is conveyed with anatomical precision. Special joints on the hands (one of which is lost), allowing them to bend, are an interesting element. The author paid particular attention to facial reproduction: a round face oval, close-set small eyes, defined arches of eyebrows on a smooth forehead, a straight nose, and clear lips are skillfully carved with the master's chisel. Virgin Mary's face is sad and thoughtful; however, her posture is calm and majestic.
