Object description
The image of the cherub symbolises a loving and wise spirit, which, according to Greek tradition, was depicted as a head with two or more wings. There is nothing corporeal about the image; the head exists only as a place for the soul, and the wings as an attribute of the spirit. Until the eleventh century, the cherub was not depicted with a child's face, but it added to the image of purity. The angel's head is turned to the left, its gaze upwards, its wings outstretched. The cherub's features are rendered with naturalistic authenticity: rosy cheeks, a snub nose, and the raised upper lip characteristic of the master. There are playful, loose curls of hair on the head. The work is characterised by harmony and weightlessness in reproducing the image.
