Object description
The most numerous sculptural group is that of angels. They were used to decorate altar compositions in churches and cathedrals and as elements of iconostasis decoration. The full-length figure of an angel is represented in a dynamic pose. His torso is gracefully arched to the right, his right leg is bent at the knee, and his head is slightly tilted back. A soft line surrounds the angel's rounded figure. The naked body is covered by a bandage on the thighs, modelled with chopped folds. They are made up of straight lines that intersect to form planes of various shapes. The head, with a short neck, is framed by tousled strands of wavy hair. The face is elongated, with plump pink cheeks. The angel's gaze is distant. The sculptural representation of the angel is characterised by Baroque plasticity, expressed in a more naturalistic modelling of the human body.
