The sculpture shows a full-length portrait of the Evangelist with a book in his right hand. His head is tilted backwards, towards his left shoulder. The ascetic image of a person immersed in himself is conveyed by the elongated oval of his thin face with protruding cheekbones, sunken cheeks, raised eyebrows, a straight nose with flared nostrils, eyes covered by eyelids, and a high forehead cut by horizontal lines of wrinkles. Dynamic strands of wavy hair and beard add to the emotionality of the image. The Evangelist is dressed in a tunic that falls below the knees, exposing his feet, on which he wears Roman sandals. The drapery of his garments evenly envelops his figure and falls in vertical folds. Despite the saint's emotional expression, the work is characterised by restraint in interpreting the pose and modelling the drapery.
