Object description
Stanislaw Mateusz Rzewuski (1662–1728, Krzywda coat of arms) was a son of Michal Florian Rzewuski (died 1687) and Hanna Dzierzek. He was a military figure, royal colonel, and Grand Crown Hetman (since 1726). Stanislaw Mateusz Rzewuski was twice married. His first marriage to Dorota Cetner was in 1690, and in 1694, Ludwika Kuniсka became his second wife. He had five children, among them Seweryn Jozef Rzewuski, the owner of the Olesko Castle, and Waclaw Petro Rzewuski, who owned the castle in Pidhirtsi. On December 18, 1718, he bought the Pidhirtsi Castle together with the surrounding villages from Prince Konstanty Sobieski, the son of the Polish King Jan III Sobieski. In 1719, he bought the Olesko Castle with all the surrounding villages from another king – Jakub Ludwik Sobieski. He was awarded with the Order of the White Eagle. In the inventory records of the Pidhirtsi Castle, the portrait was mentioned from 1768 till 1939. Stanislaw Rzewuski is depicted in the tradition of ceremonial and representative portraiture, in an official pose, with a mace in his right hand, and a ribbon of the Order of the White Eagle to emphasize his social status and solemnity. The man is shown in knightly armor, with the red drapery over it, which is a bright spot in the portrait. There is an inscription on the painting: “SEWERYN. RZEWUSKI. H.W.K.”, which is incorrect and made later.
