Object description
In Ukrainian painting of the 18th century, one can find images of married couples. In this work, leaning slightly over a table with papers and stationery, a man stands on the veranda of the manor house with columns and a view of the homestead. On the right, there is his wife sitting in an armchair. On the floor, next to the woman, there is a small basket and a dog, which was a traditional addition to the European women's ceremonial images of the 17th and 18th centuries. Depicted in a planar way, the couple is shown in fixed poses. The provincial artist painted every detail very carefully. In the family portrait, he sought to convey intimacy and, at the same time, maintain grandeur. In the background, there are common attributes of a representative painting, namely a massive column and a heavy red drapery. One can feel the depth of space in the work. Using restrained colors, the artist conveys the life of a bourgeois couple.
