Object description
A pectoral image of a young man wearing a straw hat is rotated three-quarters to the right. The man is building a brick wall, holding a brick in his left hand and a trowel in his right. He is wearing a brown shirt with long sleeves. To the right of the man, four columns of stacked bricks are depicted with a wooden bucket on top of them. The etching comes from the album "Customs and National Costumes of the Chinese," which includes 60 images of Chinese people engaged in various activities. Each image is accompanied by an explanation in German and some in French. In the 18th century, artists in Canton (Guangzhou) in southern China created these paintings for Europeans eager to learn more about China and its people.
