Object description
Altar crucifixes were an indispensable part of the church interior. The altar crucifix from the village of Perviatychi shows the master's imperfect knowledge of the anatomy of the human body. The author, trying to depict the body of Christ exhausted by suffering, emphasised the sunken abdomen and the protruding chest, showing the tension of the last breath. The Saviour's arms are outstretched, his palms open, his legs slightly bent at the knees, and his feet placed on each other, nailed together with a single nail, following the widespread Western iconography. With his eyes closed, Christ's face is one of imperturbable serenity.
