Object description
The most widespread group of sculptures are the images of angels, which served as decorative elements of iconostases, altars and other sculptural compositions. Most of them were carved in the form of children with regular features, different facial expressions, and curly hair. The image shows a full-length figure of an angel in the form of a small child with his left hand clasped to his chest. A soft, flowing line surrounds the figure. The child's plump body is rendered with anatomical accuracy. The image of the angel, following Baroque iconography, shows an expression of thoughtfulness with wide-open eyes, a snub nose, chubby cheeks, a double chin, and a slightly open mouth. Traditionally, for a cherubic angel, the head on a short neck is surrounded by wavy locks of hair with a distinctive forelock in the centre. The sculpture is imbued with the lyricism of inner peace and upliftment.
