Object description
The Ascension of Christ is one of the twelve holidays reflecting key events in the life of Jesus, described in the Gospel of Luke. The Ascension took place forty days after Jesus' crucifixion. On this day, he gathered his disciples in Bethany on the Mount of Olives and, after blessing them, ascended into heaven. Sculptures of the Ascension of Christ in many churches are placed on a tetrapod, where they remain until Easter. The tradition follows Western iconography, illustrating events described in the apocryphal Gospel. The sculpture from the Brody district depicts a full-length contrapposto image of Christ. His right hand is in a gesture of blessing, while his left hand holds a khorugv – a banner with a painted or embroidered icon of a saint. Wavy strands of dark hair and beard frame the elongated oval of Jesus' face. The piercing gaze from his wide-open brown eyes is directed at the viewer. The Savior's athletically sculpted body, skillfully crafted by the artist, is covered by a dark red himation decorated with a golden ornamental ribbon on both sides. The dynamism of the image is emphasised by Christ's posture, which imitates movement, and the soft, relief lines of folds of the drapery thrown over his left shoulder. Polychrome played a significant role in the image's overall composition.
